Well, as most of you know, on Tuesday September 1st in the early evening, I was hit by a speeding truck which veered off the road and struck me from behind. The driver took me to the ER, but then ran off. The Luna County Sheriffs Office took the report, and I can only hope, are looking for him. The gist of the damage is a bruised and painful left arm, and fractures to the inside of my right knee and the outside of my right ankle. I now have a nice cast running from my toes to mid thigh on my right leg. Never broke more than my nose and a few toes, so this is a new miserable experience. The cast will remain for 6 weeks. As I am not very coordinated, I am struggling with this walking process. Today has been my worst to date since the injury. My left arm is now black and blue from wrist to armpit, and hurts to use much. Probably trying to bop around on the crutches too much. These crutches were the only ones in town that would fit a 6 foot plus guy like me, and are designed to fold so you can get in a car, etc. During a hike today from the bathroom, the right crutch mechanism popped off and started to fold up. damn near fell on my face, but did put pressure on the bad leg which hurt like hell. A good neighbor who was a lifelong farmer, came bye for a visit and came up with a few of those plastic locking straps to make it impossible for the crutch to fold. Thank God. Feel safer now.
So, I guess my blog will now focus on getting thru the next 6 weeks, and then hopefully after that, whatever I need to do to rehab myself. Have to set my sights on how far I might be able to return myself to athletic functionality in the next two years as I approach 60!
